Kensington Wine Market Malt Messenger “We’re Open – Business As Usual-ish… I Assure You!” – Whisky News

WE GOT DODGE RAMMED

DAY 12 UPDATE!

I hope this finds you well, warm, and rested from the Family Day weekend… if Family is restful for you!

The last dozen days have been, to say the least, challenging. By now I’m sure you are aware that we were the victim of a very destructive break and enter on the morning of Friday, February 11. A brand-new pickup, stolen from a dealership lot, was used to break into the shop, completely destroying our front entrance in the process. We were, quite literally, Dodge Rammed… but we haven’t lost our sense of humour!

Over the last twelve days, we have picked up most of the pieces, counted our losses, and tried to keep things in perspective. The good news outweighs the bad: no one was injured, we are insured, a suspect has been apprehended, and we have been bolstered by the love and support from our friends, neighbours, customers, suppliers, and even our competitors.

Restoration has been slow going, due to supply shortages and bottlenecks. A week in, we received some much-needed good news, confirmation the building suffered no structural damage. While impatiently waiting for our temporary entrance to be finished, which finally happened on Sunday (Day 9), the team was busy getting the store ready to finally welcome customers in-store again while working around construction.

The storefront may not look quite as charming as you are used to, at the moment there is unpainted plywood where once we had windows. And unfortunately, due to supply constraints and bottlenecks, it will be 4-5 months until the entrance is restored to its former glory. In the meantime, we’ll pretty it up when the weather permits, and in time it will be repaired. Until then, as the sign hanging above our temporary entrance says: “I assure you, we’re open!

At some point in the months ahead there might be a “Door Crasher” or “Truckload Sale,” but the wound is a little too fresh right now. In the grand scheme of things, and in the fullness of time, this will be just another chapter in KWM’s long and colourful history. Our business remains strong, our team’s spirits are high, and we have a 30th Anniversary to celebrate in May… It will take a lot more than a little broken glass to spoil that!

On a more positive note, just before the “Dodge Ram incident,” we made a donation for $3000 to the MS Society of Canada, as a part of our pledge to donate $25/bottle from every bottle sold of our Kilchoman 14 Year MS Society Cask. Andy Dunn of Gold Medal Marketing, Kilchoman’s Alberta importer, has topped this up with a further donation of $2100.

Kensington Wine Market has been the organizer of the MS Calgary Whisky Festival since it started in 2011. 2021 would have been the 10th annual Calgary Whisky Festival, but due to Covid, we have had to cancel it for the last two years. Working with Andy Dunn and Anthony Wills from the Kilchoman Distillery, we selected a cask to help raise funds for the MS Society. At 14 years of age, it is one of the oldest Kilchomans ever bottled.

And we’re not done yet. We still have about 90 bottles of the cask to sell, and we will continue to honour our pledge to donate $25/bottle until every last bottle is sold!

Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts, your messages of support, and your continued patronage over the last couple of weeks. We look forward to seeing you in-store!

Sincerely,

Andrew Ferguson, and the Team at KWM

Whisky Wednesday Reviews Dingle Small Batch No.6, 46.5% ~ Irish Whisky News

Dingle Small Batch No.6, 46.5%

https://youtu.be/5U5YNRb5uDQ

Not really a man who enjoys port matured whiskies…there have been some big exceptions, but this is a little mind blowing!

Dingle have only been distilling since 2012, approaching that decade marker at some point this year. But after having released their first standard single malt in late 2021, this small batch release genuinely stopped me in my tracks after it smacked me in the face with beautifully contrasting bitter and sweet flavours.

I haven’t tried releases one through five, but if they’re anywhere near as good as this then we all need to sit up and pay attention to what’s going on in County Kerry.

Official and semi-official Kilkerran

Kilkerran 8 yo ‘Cask Strength Batch 5’ (56.9%, OB, 1st Fill Oloroso Sherry Casks, 2021)
Kilkerran 5 yo 2015/2021 (57.3%, Cadenhead, Annual Shop Release 2021, Campbeltown, sherry hogshead, 306 bottles)

TWJ Interviews: Chris Uhde – VP Impex Beverages

Here we go with something new. Today marks the release of the first episode of my new interview series where we get to know the people who make the whiskey industry what it is. I hope you enjoy the journey we’re about to go on! Episode one is live. You can see the video below as well as Mr. Uhde’s responses.

What’s the most memorable drink you’ve ever had? (toast at child’s wedding, birth, on a trip, whatever)
The Macallan Lalique 60 year old in the bottom of the Aria Hotel in Vegas.
What’s the most transformative moment in your career?
When I started doing volunteer curation at the Daily Pint in Santa Monica. It was where I started establishing my name in whisky.
Do you have a favorite artist? Writer, painter, pottery maker, etc?
If so what draws you to them? I don’t know if I have a favorite, I enjoy art as a single instance experience. I absorb what I am able to and then move forward as a slightly changed person. I ain’t too complex in my thoughts.
What about favorite movie or book?
Reading has never been easy for me so books are not really a thing, however I love listening to authors talk about their books because I appreciate their insight into relationships and situations. Movie…… Spirited Away – Hayao Miyazaki
What’s the accomplishment you’re most proud of? (career, life, hobby, whatever)
The life I have created in Los Angeles. Wonderful family, fulfilling career, good friends. I am living my best years ever now and it is nothing like anything I would have dreamed when I was young.
Let’s say you had to give up your current career and you had the resources and time to start over pursuing any career you wanted. What would you do?
Wow, so this is one I have to think about, but knee jerk reaction is to open a street taco combo Philly cheese steak shop in Japan.
Do you have any hobbies, obsessions or collections that extend beyond the booze world?
I fucking love playing soccer. I play whenever I can despite being slow and clumsy.
What’s your typical Friday night look like?
Hang with my wife and kid. The good life.
What’s your favorite non-alcoholic drink?
Soda Water or Coffee
What’s the most memorable meal of your life?
Taking my Mom out for Wagyu steak and anything else she wanted on the menu. She is my hero and deserves everything in the world.
2 openers and one headliner; what’s your dream concert?
Queen with original lineup opens, the 1960’s James Brown follows and then The Who headlines
You have 30 days with nothing to do and an unlimited budget, what would be your dream vacation/travel itinerary?
Either intense tour of Japan or Spain/ Portugal
Finally, what’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given (life, career, whatever) that you’d like to share with folks?
Your child/ children will grow faster than you think, don’t miss it.

Glenmorangie Milsean Review

The seventh release in the Private Editions line was the Glenmorangie Milsean (2016) which is Gaelic for Sweet Things. Created by the always curious Dr. Bill Lumsden, who oversees the production of both Glenmorangie and Ardbeg, he’s the mastermind behind these special editions. He’s the orchestrator of their creation and final release, so if you don’t like one he’s the guy to blame! 😉

To make Milsean, Dr. Bill and team got their hands on 269 Portuguese red wine barriques (casks) and had them re-toasted. This re-toasting caramelized the sugars from the wine to create an abundance of soluble sugars for their 10-year-old Glenmorangie spirit to absorb. For 2 years after that, Dr. Bill kept the barrels in the coolest corners of their warehouses to try and keep everything as balanced as possible.

After 2 years 167 of the wine barriques were chosen to be dumped, blended together and then put back in the casks for another 6 months to marry and finish. After the additional finishing was complete they dumped all the barrels, chill-filtered the whisky and bottled it as Glenmorangie Milsean.

Though, a quick note on Glenmorangie’s particular chill filtering. It’s considered a “light chill-filtration”, a brisk autumn morning chill filtration is you will. They only cool the whisky down to 7 degrees Celsius (44.6 Fahrenheit) and then use a “wider than average” filter to allow some of the oils to remain in the whisky. This occurs for every release that doesn’t expressly say “Non-Chill Filtered” on the bottle.

Let’s get to drinin’!

“Glenmorangie Milsean (Scots Gaelic for ‘sweet things’ and pronounced ‘meel-shawn’) is a single malt whisky full of intense candied fruit flavours and mouth-watering sweetness.” – Glenmorangie

Glenmorangie Milsean Tasting Notes

EYE
Ruddy orange

NOSE
Vanilla, butterscotch, malt, candy dots on wax paper, tropical and orchard fruit, citrus peels and dried fruit with lots of light sweet notes floating about.

Smells like an olde time candy shop which, coincidentally, is what they were going for.

PALATE
Vanilla, butterscotch, malt, candy dots, tropical and orchard fruit, dry cocoa, lemon zest, baking spice and dark sweets

Maltier than the aroma, but that same candy shop essence exists with light and dark sweet notes accompanied by fruit, chocolate and lemon zest with a light bit of baking spice.

FINISH
Medium -> Fruit, powdered sugar and a buttery sweetness.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Can’t exactly call it balanced as it’s one sweet note after another. However, it does have a nice full body and a soft syrupy feel to it.

Glenmorangie Milsean – Overall Thoughts and Score

A single glass of Glenmorangie Milsean is not a bad thing, but towards the end of my first review dram I didn’t immediately want another. A second would have been overwhelming in the sweetness department and I’m not a sweets guy… or sweet guy. I’m a salty/savory curmudgeonly guy. Though, I’m not so saccharophobic that I can’t tell when a whisky has merit. There are no foul, harsh or off-notes so I can’t completely trash it just because I don’t have a sweet tooth.

Of all the private editions this is the most decisive, at least in my circle of whisky friends. I’ve read some glowing reviews of it, and I think it all has to do with your love or tolerance for sweetness. If you like sweet things you’re going to love the Glenmorangie Milsean. If you don’t you probably won’t.

SCORE: 3/5 (above average, worth checking out ~ B- | 80-82) – Thanks to Travis for the sample
