Amrut Peated Cask Strength Indian Single Malt Review

Bottled at the highest proof allowed by the Indian government, this Amrut Peated Cask Strength Indian Single Malt charges out of the bottle at 123.6 proof, which sounds daunting. But when you consider that it regularly comes out of the cask at 140+ proof, this seems pretty tame.

Tasting Notes

EYE
Honey

NOSE
Herbal, malty sweet, sooty peat, dried orchard fruit, candied dates, brown sugar and some baking spice. This is expressive, complex and bold – such a massive departure from the regular Amrut Peated Indian Single Malt.

PALATE
Vanilla, dried white grapes, sooty peat, dried orchard fruit. Honey Nut Cheerios, spice, char and touches of melon rind. Like the aroma, the palate of the Amrut Peated Cask Strength Indian Single Malt is complex and interesting and far surpasses the standard release.

FINISH
Long -> Sooty peat, banana chips, dried orchard fruit and baking spice merge into a chalky/oaky note that goes on and on.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Well balanced, full round body and an oily feel

Amrut Peated Cask Strength Indian Single Malt – Overall Thoughts and Score

Wow, this loses so much of its expressiveness, depth and character when cut to 46%. I’m floored by the difference, outside of the sooty peat the Amrut Peated Cask Strength Indian Single Malt has almost no sensory relation to the regular peated release.

This is such a bold and interesting peated Indian Single Malt, I’d put it on par with the Paul John Peated any day even though they’re on opposite sides of the peated coin. Where PJ is crisp and bright the Amrut is sooty and dark. But both equal in overall quality.

I do think the Paul John would come out on top by a hair, but they’d definitely be close. Regardless, this is something I’d happily drink any day.

SCORE: 4/5
