Scotland’s Lowland region has been – and, indeed, still is – home to some of the whisky world’s best-loved drams and distilleries, including Rosebank and, more recently, the much-lauded Daftmill. It’s also the home to Glenkinchie – an underappreciated distillery, too-often overlooked in favour of its arguably more famous neighbours.
This 20-year-old, bottled as part of Diageo’s Special Releases and matured in American-oak casks, is packed with a perfect sunny-day’s-worth of soft floral and green, grassy notes, backed up by sweet summer fruits, plenty of punchy spice and clean vanilla flavours.
A crisp and clean dram, this 1990-vintage is both a great example of the famed Lowland style of single malts, and an excellent way to explore a distillery which is something of a hidden gem – all for a rather good price.
