We are back with another must-have whiskey from Doc Swinson’s. If you love rye, then you simply must experience this incredible solera-aged beauty. The juice for this incredible bottling is a blend of three ryes from the famed MPG distillery in Indiana. This fact alone makes it a compelling buy, but add in an unbelievably low price, a rum finish, and a solera aging program, and you have one of the best whiskey buys of 2020. All the hallmarks of a classic rye can be found in this bottle, so you can expect a nice level of spiciness. As a counterpoint, the rum casks smooth out any rough edges, imparting enticing notes of vanilla and a supple delivery. We are increasingly of the opinion that Doc Swinson’s can do no wrong and this excellent find is a prime example of exceptional work. Every time we present an offering from Doc Swinson’s, it sells out in a matter of hours, and we expect no different here.

Doc Swinson’s Solera Rum Cask Finished Straight Rye Whiskey (750ml) ($39.99)

One of Doc Swinson’s original plans was the creation of a solera aged rum specifically to provide barrels for this product. The rum is yet to be released, but their lovely rum cask-finished rye is already here. They start with a blend of rye whiskies distilled in Indiana aged between 4-6 years. This is introduced into their solera for a welcome, but not overwhelming, enhancement from the rum-seasoned American white oak. The three whiskies in this blend consist of three different mashbills, all from the excellent MGP distillery. The first is the classic MGP 95%/5% rye to malt. The second is the low rye mashbill, 51% rye, 45% corn and 5% malt. The third is not disclosed but it is assumed to be the classic middle range (76% rye). After another several months in the ex-solera rum casks, the bold spicy rye is tempered nicely by the sweet supple vanilla and burnt sugar flavors of the rum-tinged American oak. If you love the Angel’s Envy rye, but don’t want to pony up the $80 for that non-aged stated rum finished rye, this is the perfect substitute. If you just love the excellent quality of MGP’s rye and don’t want something that’s overtly overpowered by a cask finish at a reasonable price, look no further than this K&L California exclusive. *Double Gold San Fransico World Spirits Competition*
