Ross & Squibb Distillery Announces September Release of Remus Repeal Reserve Series VI

Latest edition comprises a medley of five bourbons aged since 2008-2014

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (Aug. 16, 2022) Ross & Squibb Distillery announced it will release its Remus Repeal Reserve Series VI Straight Bourbon Whiskey this September. The limited-edition bourbon is the sixth-annual offering of the distillery’s award-winning Remus Repeal Reserve Bourbon collection. Bottled at 100 proof/50% ABV, Remus Repeal Reserve Series VI retails for a suggested $99.99 per 750-ml bottle and will be available in limited quantities in September to coincide with National Bourbon Heritage Month.

Created by master distiller Ian Stirsman and his team of master distillers and master blenders, Series VI comprises five bourbons, aged between 8-14 years, from its 175-year-old Lawrenceburg, Indiana, distillery. Made in a signature high-rye style, the medley changes each year, allowing Stirsman and his team to experiment with their various mash bills and aged reserves. Remus Repeal Reserve Series VI is comprised of 2% 2008 Bourbon (21% Rye), 17% 2012 Bourbon (36% Rye), 27% 2012 Bourbon (21% Rye), 29% 2014 Bourbon (21% Rye) and 25% 2014 Bourbon (36% Rye). Series VI leads with aromas of rich candied fruit with a hint of nutmeg and saddle leather. The initial taste includes candied fruit and fig jam, followed by oak and barrel char, mint and slight caramel, nutmeg, toffee and honey. The finish offers a balance of sweet candied fruit and leather, with lingering sweetness and rye spice.

“The Remus Repeal Reserve series provides our team the opportunity to showcase the incredible array of aged reserves available to work with, as well as our expertise at blending these bourbons to create a special medley each year,” said Stirsman. “Series VI is the latest in this award-winning collection that is certain to be yet another excellent example of what our Remus Repeal collection represents: what great bourbon can be.”

Previous releases of Remus Repeal Reserve have achieved some of the highest recognition in the bourbon category, including winning Best Of Class at the 2021 Sunset International Spirits Competition, being named among the Top 5 American Whiskeys of 2021 by Fred Minnick, and earning 98 points from Tasting Panel Magazine (for both Remus Repeal Reserve Series IV and V).

Michter’s US*1 Barrel Strength Rye Whiskey Review (2022)

By Richard Thomas

Rating: B+

Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye from 2016
(Credit: Kurt Maitland)

Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye is a fan favorite; indeed, it’s something my Deputy Editor, Kurt Maitland, continues to speak glowingly of, often citing it as a perfect example of how higher proof is better. For a while, it looked like this expression was going to become a periodic release, like the brand’s Toasted Barrel Bourbon. We saw one in 2018, but then the expression skipped 2019 and 2020. It came out last year, though, and now here it is again for 2022. This return to normalcy takes the edge off Michter’s announcement that they would not release their 10 Year Old Bourbon this year.

We haven’t reviewed this expression since 2017, so now is as good a time as any to return to it. The bottling is said to be approximately 5 to 7 years old (albeit without formal age statement), and the labeling for 2022 indicates it is still at least partially sourced. When Michter’s will switch over fully to in-house production remains to be seen. The mash bill is also shrouded in mystery, although it is known to be a high corn, Kentucky style rye. Michter’s favors a low barrel entry proof of 103, which is why their cask strength whiskeys come out relatively low in alcohol (and often drinkable straight from the bottle). It’s also a single barrel expression, so proof varies from barrel to barrel. As opposed to a proof of 120 or higher, my sample comes in at a relatively modest 109.2, but I have read about others clocking 111.

The Whiskey
The nose follows in the sweet Kentucky style, oozing vanilla and fruity notes of pineapple and orange zest. Lurking in the background is a note that sits astride earthy cocoa and barrel char; it’s faint enough that I can’t decide which. A sip flips the show, with the spices–the spiciness expressed itself only in a Bigelow Constant Comment kind of way in the scent–making their appearance on the palate. The pepper current is a soft one, however, well-balanced by tea tannin and brown sugar. The finish runs spice, starting as cinnamon before fading to dry wood.

The Price
Officially, this bottle should fetch $100. The market value, however, is currently hovering between $170 and $225 a bottle. It’s hard to justify double the price at the retail level, except on the basis of the 2019-2020 drought creating an anticipatory demand. Hopefully, prices will fall now that the expression is back in annual release.

Kavalan Sherry-Aged Single Cask at Nearly 60% Off – Taiwanese Whisky News

Over 50% Off a Collector’s Dream Single Cask, For a Limited Time
Kavalan “Solist” Amontillado Sherry Cask Strength 56.3% ABV Single Barrel Taiwanese Single Malt Whisky (750ml)
(Previously $600) ($249.99)

“I hope these jaw-dropping releases become available to us regularly at this pricing. That unfortunately is a pipe dream, so we’ll just have to enjoy it while it lasts.”
— David Othenin-Girard, K&L Spirits Buyer

At the cornerstone of this coveted whiskey line, the sherry-aged casks present the quintessential Kavalan poise and grace that has won this iconic distillery its countless accolades and awards over the years, including the 2021 Distillery of the Year at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, as well as a near-maniacal following among the most committed collectors. One of two spectacular amontillado-aged single casks recently sourced at utterly mind-boggling pricing, this 56.3% ABV barrel is described by our own David Othenin-Girard as “wildly complex” with an approachability that lends itself to a very broad audience of aficionados. The overtly opulent profile “more than delivers the goods in way that distinguishes it from the other two casks,” as David notes. Collectible whiskies like this very rarely come up at such discounted pricing, so any savvy collector looking to maximize their purchasing power should beat a quick path and secure their bottles today.

It’s pretty exciting tasting these Kavalans and doubly so getting to compare similar casks. The two amontillados we have were both distilled in 2010 and bottled at around eight years old in April of 2008. This barrel is slightly lower proof, and the character is distinct from its sister cask. The same burnished color, though. The nose is a big fruit bomb with lots of stewed stone fruit and raisined characteristics—dried plum, baked peaches, molasses syrup, confectionary candies, almond cookies, and sweet tea. On first glance, this barrel is closest to the oloroso stuff but with something extra—a sur-age character that’s unique to amontillado. Big fruity nose translates to a much less spicy palate, with exceptional sweetness and a seriously creamy character. This is likely the most approachable of three Kavalans but by no means a slouch. It’s wildly complex even without the extra savory character of the higher-proof cask. Tough call on which is better, but this is the one I’d recommend if Kavalan has ever felt a little over the top on the tannins for you, as it’s the softest expression of the three barrels we have. It more than delivers the goods in way that distinguishes it from the other two casks.

The 411 On Four Roses Small Batch LE 2022

Today, Four Roses Distillery announced the launch of its 2022 Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon on September 17. The release will be the 15th in its series of limitedquantity special bottlings.

Nonchill filtered and bottled at 109 proof, the 2022 Limited Edition Small Batch features four different handselected recipes aged 14 to 20 years. These recipes represent four of the distillerys 10 distinct bourbon recipes a 14 yearold bourbon from the OESF recipe, a 14 yearold OESV, a 15 yearold OESK, and a 20 yearold OBSV.

From the beginning of crafting this years limited edition small batch Bourbon, two particular batches stood out to me as potential candidates to go into the blend a 14yearold recipe batch that is remarkably smooth and rich on the palate, and a 20yearold recipe batch that exhibits the best fruit barrel and spice qualities of extra aged Bourbon, said Brent Elliott, Four Roses Master Distiller. The test blends revolved around those two batches until we landed on a liquid with a perfect balance that is unique, layered, mellow and elegant.

Four Roses will distribute approximately 14,100, 750ml handnumbered bottles of the 2022 Limited Edition Small Batch Bourbon to be sold in the United States with a suggested retail price of $179.99.

In addition to the special bottling rolling out to select retailers next month, Four Roses will offer a limited quantity for sale at the Four Roses Distillery Visitor Center via a public lottery draw. Individuals may register for the lottery from August 22 to August 26 by visiting the Four Roses website. Those who are selected via random draw will schedule appointments to pick up their purchase at the Four Roses Distillery.
