Limavady Single Barrel Single Malt Irish Whiskey Review

I picked up this Limavady Single Barrel Single Malt Irish Whiskey at Trader Joe’s because of the bottle shape: it was so weird. I’d never heard of the brand and almost left it there, but curiosity won out and I picked it up. It wasn’t till I got home I discovered it was imported by Whistle Pig.

I’m not the biggest fan of Whistle Pig, but I thought it was interesting they were getting into the import business. Well, technically they’ve been in the import business for a while – importing Canadian rye and bottling it in Vermont – but interesting they’re just doing the importing. The distilling and bottling is all happening in Ireland.

Now, let’s get to drinkin’!

EYE
Light Amber

NOSE
Banana taffy, malty sweetness, vanilla candy, graham, dried apples, touch waxy and floral.

Fairly standard aroma without anything sharp or off.

PALATE
Banana taffy, malty sweetness, vanilla candy, graham, dried apples, touch waxy and caramel.

Not too different from aroma and again a fairly standard delivery.

FINISH
Medium -> Banana, vanilla, baking spice and graham.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Decent balance, light body and a soft light feel.

Limavady Single Barrel Single Malt Irish Whiskey – Overall Thoughts and Score

Soft, slightly buttery and increadibly easy to sip. I thought the odd shaped bottle might make pouring awkward, but it actually made it a bit easier and I love those glass “corks”.

The aroma builds in sweetness as it opens but the palate builds in maltiness. It’s perfectly sippable and makes a great cocktail, like a Tipperary, if you ever want one. Well done Limavady on bringing something interesting to market.

SCORE: 3/5 (above average, worth checking out ~ B- | 80-82)

Nikka Days Japanese Whisky Review

By Michael Cervin

Rating: B

Nikka Days Blended Japanese Whisky
(Credit: Michael Cervin)

Nikka was founded in Japan in 1934 and currently uses two different distilleries to hone their blends. As the bottom tier blended whisky of the Nikka brand (The Nikka, and Super Nikka hold the top spots), the Days iteration is meant to be light, easy going and affordable for everyday use. If you’re new to whiskey in general, or Japanese whisky in particular, Nikka Days is a fine introduction into this spirit, being fairly mild and thus more palatable to more people.

The Whisky

Color: Light amber-orange color.

Nose: Light peat is first off the glass, then light cinnamon, malt, sweet citrus and caramel.

Palate: This blend sits softly on the palate without barely any sense of burn. There are light notes of cinnamon, crème brûlée, browned butter, butterscotch, caramel, citrus zest and mild Asian five spice. It is mild, and meant to be mild and not meant to be an aggressive whiskey and at 40% ABV, it doesn’t drink like it. You’d expect a bit more girth, but this rather delicately balances fruity and malted flavors along with peat. It’s a bit sweet, no doubt to cater to a broad demographic, but there is a still a peppery and smooth quality. This is ideal for those new to whiskey and brown spirits and anyone who wants a small glass of solid whisky that is pleasant and agreeable.

The Price
$49.99 is the higher end and typically it retails for $45.

FETTERCAIRN’S WAREHOUSE COLLECTION UNVEILS 4TH RELEASE – Scotch Whisky News

FETTERCAIRN’S WAREHOUSE COLLECTION UNVEILS 4TH RELEASE

The experimental series explores Fettercairn’s distinctive tropical house style born from the unique copper cooling ring distillation

Warehouse Collection has been crafted by pioneering Whisky Maker Gregg Glass

Batch No.004 born in Warehouse 2 delivers cracked pepper on the nose, and sweet Hungarian Oak on the palate

Fettercairn Distillery has announced the much anticipated fourth release of its hugely popular and sought-after Warehouse Collection, created by Master Whisky Maker Gregg Glass to celebrate the hidden gems within its 14 dunnage warehouses and to showcase a commitment to truly innovative and progressive maturation.

Distilled in 2014, Fettercairn Warehouse 2 Batch No. 004 has been matured in handpicked first fill ex-Bourbon barrels, alongside re-charred Hungarian wine oak casks. This unconventional selection of casks was selected from the treasure trove of aging stock in Warehouse 2, where high humidity combined with a relatively cool and temperate environment make its mark on the maturing spirit and tropical house style.

Natural golden honey in colour, non-chill filtered and bottled at 48.8% ABV to intentionally amplify the flavours of the maturation journey, this definitive character begins on the nose with Madagascan vanilla, poached pears and cracked pepper, leading to flavours of toffee, honey and rich nuttiness.  With a vibrant yet elegant balance of honey dew melon, passion fruit, burnished citrus and sweet oak wood, this is a surprisingly tropical treat with soft spice for added depth.

Born in Warehouse 2, a personal favourite of Gregg Glass, Batch No.004 was matured in a unique environment – humid, cool and temperate – which allowed the whisky maker to enhance specific aspects of Fettercairn’s tropical character and balance the influence of each cask.

The Warehouse Collection celebrates the unconventional approach to whisky making pioneered by Master Whisky Maker Gregg Glass and the whisky making community at this unique distillery:

“At Fettercairn we have had an opportunity to take a different perspective on whisky making.  The ingenuity of our unique copper cooling ring produces a brilliant and tropical new make spirit.

“Each warehouse is unique too, which allows myself – as whisky maker – to play with the influence on the whisky as it matures.

“Our Warehouse Collection offers a window into the unconventional approach that we take here at Fettercairn. In many ways we are still exploring different aspects of Fettercairn’s tropical distillery character. Each experiment we lay down plays with the balance of nature, nurture and the character of each unique warehouse. Batch No.004 is a one-off expression that showcases Fettercairn in a new, unexpected way, which we hope will delight admirers of our distillery”.

Fettercairn Warehouse 2 Batch No.004 will be available at an RSP of £60 in key global markets including  the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France from September.

Four Roses Premium American Whiskey (blended) Review

In the late 1950s, Seagram’s stopped selling Four Roses Bourbon in the USA and instead started selling this: Four Roses Premium American Whiskey (blended). Before Seagram’s bought the brand in 1943, it was one of the best-selling bourbons in America. Why they decided to change it to a rotgut blend in the USA and ship the bourbon overseas is anyone’s guess.

Though, no one has ever accused the people who ran Seagram’s (into the ground) of making good decisions. The once massive drinks giant fell incredibly quick and its corporate corpse divvied up by the other large drinks companies of the day. Now, let’s get to drinkin’!

Four Roses Premium American Whiskey (blended) – Details and Tasting Notes

“Premium American Whiskey A Blend” – Four Roses

Four Roses Premium American Whiskey (blended) Tasting Notes

EYE
Light amber

NOSE
Banana taffy, metal, stale spice, paint thinner and Peeps.

It smells worse than I described… why did they do this?

PALATE
Tastes like a musty version of the aroma. Caused an immediate spit take. This is foul.

FINISH
Short -> Musty banana Peeps

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
No balance, thin body, and a watery feel.

Four Roses Premium American Whiskey (blended) – Overall Thoughts and Score

This is a true rotgut whiskey. The best thing I can say about it is how mercifully short the finish is; this is not a flavor you want lingering. It is so unbelievably bad, I have a hard time thinking there’s any Four Roses bourbon in here at all. I’ve had pre-Seagram’s Four Rose bourbon and it was good, and I can’t detect any of that goodness in this.

Sitting here, forcing my way through a small glass of it for this review, I can’t help but wonder about the exact thought process that went into the decision to switch from Bourbon to this? In the court of whisky, this was a crime against bourbon. A crime Seagram’s has definitely paid for. Its death was rather swift and spectacular all at the same time and many of the whiskey brands they once mismanaged went on to have great lives under different owners. Like Four Roses being brought back to life by Kirin.

Getting back to the whiskey, the Four Roses Premium American Whiskey (blended) is a foul-smelling and tasting rotgut. Among the worst I’ve had, but if you get the chance to try it definitely do. It’ll make you even more grateful for the Four Roses gracing our shelves today

SCORE: 0.5/5 (so bad it doesn’t deserve a rating ~ “F” | 0-59)
