Redemption 10 Year Barrel Proof High Rye Bourbon Review

And now we kick it up a notch with this Redemption 10 Year Barrel Proof High Rye Bourbon. Compared to the first three Redemptions this is 6 years older and significantly higher in ABV. It’s as close to the cask as you can get this side of a rick house.

Redemption 10 Year Barrel Proof High Rye Review

Before we jump into this bourbon review I have to take a second to say how much I appreciate the transparency of Redemption. Source (MGP), mash ( 60/36/4), age (10), it’s all there and delivered uncut and unmessed with – just pure whiskey awesomeness. This is why I’m such a fan of theirs.

“The spicy rye notes evolve with flavors of dark chocolate, licorice and fennel laced together with cardamom, black pepper and tarragon. The finish is long and mellow.” – Redemption Whiskey

Tasting Notes

EYE
Polished oak

NOSE
Oak, dried dark fruit, caramel, spice, brownies, copper, candy sweetness, grain sweetness, oil and a touch of wood smoke. The aroma is so freaking deep and rich with oak and those darkly sweet and fruity notes, though what really draws me into the Redemption 10 Year Barrel Proof High Rye Bourbon is the pops of spice and the light whisp of wood smoke.

PALATE
Oak, dried dark fruit, brown sugar, dilly spice, sugar cookies, copper, candy sweetness, grain sweetness, oil and a touch of cocoa and wood smoke. Similar to the aroma, but pulls in a bit more bakery sweetness and brightens it up a touch without losing that intriguing wood smoke.

FINISH
Long -> Oak, spice, brown sugar, copper and wood smoke. Starts like a chunk of oak but fades out to a sweety-n-spicy-n-smoky chunk of oak.

BALANCE, BODY and FEEL
Wonderful balance, full body and a coating, oily feel.

Redemption 10 Year Barrel Proof High Rye Bourbon – Final Thoughts and Score

The first words out of my mouth after sniffing and sipping this were “holy shit this is good” and then I laughed because it scratched that good-bourbon itch so perfectly. It’s an itch that’s ever-present and when it’s scratched, it feels oh so nice and MGP hits that mark quite often.

MGP deserves as much respect as any other distillery making great whiskey and this Redemption 10 Year Barrel Proof High Rye Bourbon is all the evidence you need. It’s an almost perfect bourbon that fills the sense and will put a smile on any bourbon lover’s face.

SCORE: 4.5/5

Summary

This is an intense bourbon. Multifaceted, complex, whatever you want to call it, it’s just fantastic and carries this wonderfully oily depth from nose to finish that’s just not readily available in the market today. Awesome.
